United States, 3rd Oct 2026 - For retired pastor Jim Hinman, writing "The Story of James W. Seward and the Underground Railroad: And the Bristol Hill Church" was never simply a research project. It grew out of a personal connection to the historic Bristol Hill Congregational Church in Volney, New York, a congregation separated from the life of James Watkins Seward by 130 years, but tied to it all the same.
Hinman's path to Seward's story began with the church's own records and archives, which led him to rare correspondence between Seward and abolitionist Gerrit Smith, as well as Seward's own dictated confession, recorded shortly before his 1841 execution in Missouri.
"James’s story matters because it speaks to the immense resilience of those forced to prove their own humanity in a divided nation," Hinman says. "Separated by 130 years, our connection through the Bristol Hill Church inspired me to ensure his true voice and legacy are finally heard."
That sense of obligation shaped every stage of the book's development, from the years spent in archival research to the decision to dedicate all author proceeds to the church that first connected him to Seward's life.
"The Story of James W. Seward and the Underground Railroad: And the Bristol Hill Church" will be available worldwide through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other major retailers.
